Artech is the primary materials testing and inspection company in the East Kootenays, closely associating with regional engineering firms to provide an independent complementary service. Our service area extends from Creston to the Alberta border and north into the Columbia Valley. Our work consists of approximately 40% concrete, 40% structural soils and 20% asphalt pavement, with a fully equipped lab to support our field activities.

The Opportunity

To support Artech’s operations, we are on looking for a talented individual that will embrace our close-knit culture and positive, team-oriented working environment.

We are looking for a Material Testing Technician to support our Cranbrook-based team with projects throughout the East Kootenay region. This candidate will support our clients throughout the remainder of 2022 and has the potential to become a permanent employee.

Position: Material Testing Technician

Term:
Full-time for Q3 & Q4 of 2022 (potential to extend and/or become permanent)

Salary:
Competitive compensation package based on experience

Position Summary

Materials Testing Technicians are responsible for testing and inspecting various construction materials such as soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete for QC or QA purposes. Technicians will also be responsible for preparing field inspection and lab test reports. This position involves fieldwork as well as working in a laboratory setting.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Sampling and testing fresh concrete (including slump, air content, temperature, and casting cylinders).
  • Collecting soil, aggregate or hot-mix asphalt samples on site.
  • Conducting in-place field density testing using a nuclear densometer.
  • Performing laboratory soil tests (sieve analysis, hydrometer, Atterberg limits, Proctor analysis).
  • Concrete compressive strength testing.
  • Performing laboratory asphalt Marshall tests.
  • Cleaning, maintaining and calibrating test equipment.
  • General lab maintenance.

Working Conditions/Environment

  • Standard work weeks are five days, Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day.
  • Overtime and some weekend work are required.
  • Frequent travel and outdoor work at project sites are required. Outdoor tasks are performed in varying weather conditions.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

Education, experience, and certification
  • Possess or working towards a Civil Engineering/Geotechnical Degree, Technology Diploma or Certificate.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration in the EGBC/ASTTBC will be considered an asset. An equivalent combination of training and experience will also be considered.
  • CCIL Certification for soils, concrete and asphalt would be an asset.
  • Radiation Safety and TDG Certification preferred with experience using a nuclear densometer.
  • A valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.

Technical Knowledge
  • Knowledge of basic soil testing procedures and compaction techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic engineering principles and practices used in civil construction and road projects.
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret standards, specifications, and test methods according to MMCD, CSA, ASTM, AASHTO.
  • Familiar with construction and worksite safety procedures and precautions.
  • Working knowledge of computer software, specifically: spreadsheets, word processing, databases, and email.
Technical Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze field data
  • Demonstrated ability to observe, report and maintain thorough, legible, and accurate field records.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
Other key skills
  • Be physically fit and is someone who enjoys demanding field work.
  • Capable of lifting 25kg test samples.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Have a professional and positive attitude.
  • Be able to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and manage assigned workload and productivity expectations, advising supervisors of any significant issues.
